This is a feature actually. There are a couple of benefits to this behavior. The first is that if you just want to navigate your message list to read another message using the keyboard, you don't mark messages as read everywhere along the path. The other is that it's quicker to jump to a message further along the list because it doesn't have to stop to render the message.
