When the install window finally opens there will be in the file menu the
option to run Disk Utility. The second choice there will be the equivalent
of First Aid. 

You can then quit the Utility and then the installer which gives you the
option to resart

YOU DO NOT NEED TO REINSTALL to get to the Disk Utility.
