I've found that Entourage 2004 is a bit more twitchy about it's database
than the previous version.

In my experience most users have to rebuild after either a system crash or a
crash of a Microsoft application. Here we haven't had any problems with
System Crashes, but several of the new MS apps were failing and causing the
rebuild desktop problem. Word was especially bad causing those heart
stopping "database damaged" messages.

We eventually solved the problem by removing all our old prefs, removing old
versions of Office, and reinstalling the program fresh from the CD. We also
are careful not to launch Word when we are doing lots of font manipulation
using 3rd party software like Suitcase or Font Agent Pro (Word's font
handling is still somewhat inelegant compared to virtually all our other
apps). With these safeguards in place Word stopped crashing and the problem
stopped. Now if I could just get the guy in the other office to stop kicking
the power cord.

One more note, one of our users found that physically moving the database
from one drive to another (he travels and likes to keep his up to date
database with him when using a portable) can also trigger the rebuild. We
still haven't found a solution to this although copying both the Microsoft
User Data folder and the MS prefs seems to help. We were thinking of cooking
up a little app to help users move these and other key data files back and
forth between machines as it is a common issue for those of us with multiple
macs.

Of course none of this helps you with your current situation, but it might
prevent some future pain.
