I leave mail on server (for all but a handful of the 50 accounts in this
identity) for 7 days. I have never experienced mail being downloaded a
second time when I move the MUD folder back and forth. That is specifically
WHY I move the MUD folder - the read/unread flag stays with the database.
Only time I have ever had any email left on the server downloaded without my
wanting it to be was when I upgraded from X to 2004 - but I was able to
recover from that deluge by quickly taking Entourage offline and then
deleting all the duplicate mail from a "new since launch" custom view.

Yes, you have to shut down Entourage, and any other open Microsoft Office
app. If I have Excel open, for example, when I copy my MUD folder over to my
Powerbook, it balks that the database I am replacing (I just copy over the
previous MUD folder) is in use. If I quit Excel and then copy the new MUD
folder again, it gladly replaces it.

I have never moved any preference files - I move the MUD folder only

I suspect you might be leaving an MS application or daemon running, manually
moving the old MUD folder to the trash and then moving the new MUD folder
into Documents. If that's what you are doing, then Entourage is still using
the old database, which is why it would download all the mail again (that's
a surefire way to lose mail since that database is in the trash in most
cases). Plus, you will lose anything that sent from the new database on the
other computer. If that's what you are doing, instead of copying the "new"
MUD folder to your Documents folder, and saying "ok" to the "are you sure
you want to replace" prompt, then I can see why there's a problem.

In Office 2001, Office X and now Office 2004, the moving of my MUD folder
back and forth between multiple machines have never been a problem and has
never caused any unusual requests for me to rebuild my database.

Same here, which is why I use the MUD-swapping method and have perfected it
:)

If you need a hand making this work, feel free to email me privately. I know
the system works because I'd be totally lost without it!
