It is possible to compare different lenses' contrast and sharpness if the
same yardstick is used for all lenses.
AFAIK, the yardstick for measuring sharpness and contrast are MTF tests.
Canon's "Lens Work" book has MTF charts for every EF lens, and a guide to
interpreting the charts. MTF tests can also be found at
http://www.photodo.com. Photodo.com also "grades" the lenses by weighting
the MTF test results.
In my experience, better MTF results correlate with the perceived quality of
a lens' pictures: 'L' lenses do very well in these tests. On average, non-L
lenses don't. The ones that do are the real bargains: low price, excellent
optics. I'd include the 50 f/1.4 and the 100 f/2 in this category.
