I think if I had an EOS 1000 I would upgrade my camera body for sure. My
good old EOS 10 focus points light up red, and I got 1/4000 speed, no
problem focusing horizontal or vertical, leader out capability, timer in all
modes, and 5 FPS to boot. Granted I only got 3 focus points, but usually I
am using only the center one. As for using a cable shutter release, I don't
miss that with my remote controller.

I think he was definitely joking, judging by his smiley face :-)

I never wanted for any different focusing screen. I like the one I got,
works great.

I agree the partial metering button is difficult to push and keep held. I
would prefer to be able to switch it.

I never use DEP mode either, just go by the old 1/3rd through the field
system. If I have to maximize the focus it just means I have to go to
smallest aperture I can, and focus on the most important part. If I'm
worried, I'll just bracket with some shots closer.
While I'm here, how about some opinions from 1N owners about why they
don't feel a need to upgrade, and what they like about their cameras. I've
been thinking the 1N to be a nice body. Any features you are missing with
it? Any complaints? I've seen several around used for about the price of a
new EOS 7, and a used 1N just seems like much more of a camera to me. I'm
wondering about the switches and buttons on the 1N vs the 1V. The 1V seemed
a bit too adorned with them to me as well as the 3.
