I can only tell you what my 10 does. I think you're talking about servo
focus mode. With a USM lens, it's pretty good. However, when trying to shoot
moving dogs, I'm out of luck. A steadily moving subject like a car is pretty
easy though. A child would be a bit easier than a dog. It depends on the
distance too. If it's close and zig zagging, likely you will have trouble.
If it's at least 15 feet away, likely you could have some luck. You might
waste some film, but one good shot might make it worth while. It's tough to
zoom and focus manually at the same time, and most of these lenses aren't
all the great at manual focus as far as tracking goes.
I'd love to hear what kind of results others have had with the newer
bodies. I was wondering how much better they are.
