This is the case with any large lens, and of course the purpose of having a lens
like this in the first place to to achieve specific results--you don't buy one and
then go looking for something to use it for. If it is a lens you need and can
afford, then it doesn't really matter how often you use it as long as you've got
it when you do need it. If it sits in a closet for fifty weeks out of the year
because you don't need it more often than that, well, that's ok as long as you
take it when you do need it. It is one of those things where high price doesn't
necessarily translate into heavy use. I happen to have a 300/2.8L, but unless I
think I'm going to need it, it stays home and I carry a 200/2.8L and 1.4x extender
instead. But when I *do* need the big lens, I sure am happy to have it.

The question then becomes, why would you use a teleconverter on a 400 mm lens when
you already have a 600 mm lens? Sure, there is some size difference, but it isn't
of the magnitude as that of the 200/2.8 vs. 300/2.8 mentioned above--indeed,
according to Canon's spec sheets, both the 400/2.8 IS and 600/4 IS weigh 5300g.
