Perhaps I should have said that for folks without an unlimited budget, that is not a
particularly rational or cost-effective way to make an equipment choice. For most
people, to buy a big expensive telephoto lens just because it is seductive, rather
than with some clear idea of what they would use it for, isn't a very sensible
decision.

But of course that doesn't mean that *you* can't buy one just "because it's there,"
and then go in search of a subject.  ;-)
