Interesting question.....
The ST-E2 seems to have no ability to set manual control. Slaves are
reliant on the master's settings, so only the 550EX (and maybe the
MR-14EX) can master slaves in manual mode. I see no way to trigger the
slaves to fire other than the shutter release button (not including the
"test transmission signal"). But, even the shutter release button is not
a good option because the pre-fire(s) will confuse the flash meter.
I think the only way to meter the subject would be to fire each flash
manually at the desired power level and let the meter calculate the
exposure level. ...except that the 420EX doesn't have that capability.
I guess you're out of with the ST-E2 and 420EX's.
