Hmm... all this talk has gotten me worried.

I'm on the verge of buying a 420ex as a slave to my 550ex (EOS-3) for some
macro and close range bird work. I have a Minolta Autometer IVF and
currrently manually meter my cheapo slave flashes. They work fairly well
with the 550ex in manual mode. Since I have E-TTL pre-flash turned off, I
can meter manually without any problem.

I'm worried about the 550ex/420ex combination because I wonder if the E-TTL
master/slave combo uses a pre-flash to transmit information? Or does it use
infra-red? If it's a visible light system, then I'm in trouble since this
will mean I can't manually meter with my Minolta.

If it's infrared (which I hope it is), then all is good.

I also want to confirm that I can still use the master:slave combo (with
variable lighting ratios) in full Manual mode....
