You can always use a flash meter to gauge the flash output whether the flash
is on or off camera. Triggering the flash is done by depressing the test
button on the flash or on the ST-E2. Hope this help.

Is it possible to use a flash meter with the 550EX and 420EX being used
off-camera? If so, how? I don't know of a way to fire the flashes without
tripping the shutter.
I don't yet own the ST-E2 or the 420EX so I don't know if there's anything
about it in the manuals.
