You're right. I was ignorant. I just thought that if someone is going to use
flash meter, then the E-TTL (and all other TTL's as well) is not going to be
used. In other words only manual output is going to be metered.
I didnot have any problem metering the 550EX fired by ST-E2, when I was
taking portraits of my colleagues. I was using the 550EX as the main light.
But I had trouble using a cheap slave (which was coupled by a flash sensor)
to light the background. Apparently the flash sensor was sensitive enough to
detect the supposed-to-be-infrared-light from the ST-E2 everytime I
depressed shutter button. All my pictures were not lit as I wanted, the
background was not lit. The light signal from the ST-E2 triggered the slave
before the main light lit and before the shutter was open.
Just want to share my experience :-(

You can always use a flash meter to gauge the flash output whether the flash
is on or off camera. Triggering the flash is done by depressing the test
button on the flash or on the ST-E2. Hope this help.

Yes Luke, but the preflash will pre-trigger the flash meter and you will get
an erroneous meter reading. You need to set the flash to manual mode in
which
case the output will be one flash and then you can use your meter to
determine
exposure.
