Hi all,
I have been an EOS-5 user for about seven years now. I have always been very
happy with it, although I am about to switch to the EOS-1V HS. Having tried
this top-of-the-line piece of equipment I noticed faster and more accurate
AF, which is really important for me as an aviation photographer.
But back to the EOS-5:
I only experienced a few problems with the EOS-5 over the years. One time
the lens-unlock-button was lost and changing lenses became a challence for
that trip. The same thing happened to a friend of mine.
Two other friends had a problem with the mode selector knob, which either
broke off the camera completely or disconnected form the connecting shift.
In either case the complete top of the body had to be replaced which cost
quite a lot of money.
Just a small number of times I had some command (software) problems, but I
always found that unplugging the battery reset the camera. Although very
easy to fix, it can be frustrating when you don't want to miss a particular
shot.
The worst problem occured on an aircraft-carrier in the Persian Gulf this
year. Together with a friend we "wrecked" three (3!) EOS-5's within five
minutes. Two bodies started to rewind the film automatically, but the
counter got stuck at 33 and 11. Because of the noise on the deck we didn't
notice the rewinding and got stuck with 2 EOS-5's that told us they had film
loaded, but refused to shoot another shot. The third body jammed completely:
The mirror didn't come down and all the display showed was "Empty Battery".
When the camera was locked (L-position), and one pushed the shutter release
button, the camera started making really awful noises inside. Nothing seemed
to work anymore, not even after resetting with a fresh battery. Only after
my friend took all three bodies down below the deck, the problems were
solved by a touch of magic. We suspect that the powerful radar interfered
with the camera's electronics, although the forth camera (EOS-1V HS)
continued to operate without any problems.
Hope this terror-stories are of any use to anyone.
Best regards,
Iwan Bogels
