I missed a good part of this and I hope this is still helpful.

There was a flurry of command dial problems for a while. Then it seemed to go
away. The newest EOS-5s were supposedly fixed although there was no
announcement to that effect. I had my A2e since 1995 and the dial never gave
me any grief but I had it fixed anyway a year or so ago. It is now an EOS-5.

I haven't seen anything about the problem for a while, except where somebody is
buying a used one and asks about the problem.

Canon never admits to any problems, IMHO. Things just suddenly get fixed. The
early EOS-3 was underexposing. Canon said nothing but EOS-3s were hard to get
for a while. No reason was given but when they were readily available again
there were no more complaints of underexposing. Coincidence?

Everybody has a photographic memory. Some just don't have any film.
