Yes, you are spot on. Nikon has been riding on their name for too long with
very little real innovation coming from their stable in the last 20 or so
years. Looking at the $1000+ body range (EOS3-F100 and 1V-F5) Canon offers
more performance and features as well as equal or better durability than
Nikon. But it is in lens technology that Canon really takes the lead.
Canon's lenses (especially telephotos and long zooms) are better than
anything else out there and mostly costs less than the Nikon equivalents.
Then, there is the issue of compatibility. Nikon doesn't care to maintain
good compatibility throughout their system which IMO is really confusing.
In the digital arena, the situation is somewhat different. With the D1
series having really taken the proffesional market by surprise, it took some
time for Canon to catch up. They now have better options available out there
(1D,1Ds) but the battle for the digital crown has only but started.
(Personally, I'm waiting for the dust to settle a bit and am quite happy
with my 20+MP, 7fps pro spec EOS3)
