I would suggest against using a simple continuity tester to check out the Kenko.  I
also have a Tamron 1.4X (C-AF1 MC4), and although it doesn't convert the aperture to
the correct value, it DOES have a chip inside.  I discovered it after taking the
converter apart because it was stuck on a lens (long, un-related story).  I don't
know what the chip does, but I'd be very concerned about applying large external
voltages or currents to it.
