Those looking to buy the new Canon 24-70mm F2.8L should check the
plastic ring in front of the rubber focus ring. This ring tends to
separate from its fixed position and slides forward toward the front of
the lens.
This has happened on more than one lens and Canon is aware of it. The
older 28-70mm has small screws that hold this same ring in place, but
the newer 24-70mm design does not have these little screws and the ring
can easily be pulled out from its normal position.
A friend showed his 4 week old lens to a Canon rep at a show and the
Canon rep compared it to another lens he pulled out of the box. To his
amazement the plastic ring on the new lens did the same thing. He
indicated to send any lens with this problem into repair.
