Both are fair comments, but this "seems" (my opinion only) to be stemming
from the manual focusing days when one would zoom to compose first and then
have to tweak the final focusing, and it does make sense to do this last bit
of critical adjustment with the barrel of the lens cradled above the palm
and the focus finalized with the finger tips with the focusing ring located
near the front of the lens.

But these days with the AF working so well that about the only adjustment
made by most users being only the zoom control (heck, that's why I traded in
the A-1 and 4 manual focusing lenses), wouldn't it make MORE sense to locate
the most used control near the front of the lens instead where it's more
natural to control ?
