On the EF20-35 (non-L) and EF28-135 I currently own, the wider zoom ring is located ahead of the much narrower manual focus ring, it suits me very well as the zoom ring fits naturally and easily in my hands for its' function, while the manual focus ring is hardly used anyway so its' narrowness has never bothered me.
But in looking at the EF17-40 L recently, I've noticed an annoying quirk that I've not seen mentioned here before where the manual focus ring is located ahead of the zoom ring, and when I tried it out in the store I invariably tweak the focus ring when I tried to zoom, the store owner found it odd as well until he took out an EF24-70 and realized it also had the front focus ring rear zoom ring set up as well, it's almost as since the L lenses of similar models and likely past models have had this arrangement, that Canon has maintained it. Not sure if I will simply get used to this set up over time if I do get the lens, but to have the EF28-135 and the EF-14-70 with opposite focus and zoom ring locations may cause me a few shots here and there trying to change the mind set after changing lens!
