I think the traditional placement is for the zoom ring to be closer to the
camera body. For me, it helps if I'm shooting with the hood reversed I can
still operate the zoom ring, which I tend to use more than the focus ring.

I have the 20-35mm and 28-135mm and always felt they were backwards,
fortunately I've just replaced the 20-35mm with the 17-40mm so half my
problem is solved.

At least all of the Canon zoom rings work in the same direction, unlike some
others like Sigma.
