Ercoupers: I'm in the process of retiring from the Navy (22 years), moving to Minneapolis and starting a new job. I've decided to hang onto my Ercoupe and get into a bigger plane at some point down the road. This means I'll be making a long cross country in the next week or two from San Diego to Minneapolis in my Ercoupe. My route will take me from San Diego to Phoenix, across New Mexico and the Texas panhandle to Oklahoma City. From OK, I'll make a straight shot up to Minneapolis, stopping in Nebraska and Iowa along the way. The first few legs over the mountains and high deserts will be done high, 7,500-9,500. With my O-200 and 69" prop, I know at my typical cruise power setting of 2400rpm gets me about 3.2-3.4 hours out of the main wing tanks including the climb and average 95 knots TAS. From OK to Minneapolis its pretty flat all the way up the Great Plains and I'd like to go lower. I've never gone on a long cross country below 3,500 and was wondering what kind of endurance you see cruising down low around 1,000 agl (1500msl average). Does the short climb make up for a higher fuel burn down low?? Any advice would be appreciated.
