----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----I was cruising, and all of the sudden it went bang! I saw a whit object go over the top of my left wing, then it was normal. I thought that I had hit a bird at first. But the engine was still turning and making rpm's so I decided not to put it in a field just yet. When I landed and got out I noticed the spinner was gone, there was a hole in my wing, and the prop was all nicked up. Also half of the backing plate was left. So we think the spinner came off went through the prop and hit the wing. I believe this was due to a failure of the backing plate.
