I'm not sure who goes to the trouble to do this but after belonging to the group a couple of weeks and trying to read everything I was overwhelmed and switched to this when I saw it mentioned in the emails. Please just post your messages to ONE of the forums. If it is related to Coupes, flying, FAA, regulations, technique, mechanics, parts, etc., it belongs on the TECH forum. If it is another subject that we might talk about at a flyin, then please post it on FLYIN. All the current subjects belong on TECH except Red Barn reservations. Let's please just post the other subjects' messages on TECH. But please don't post messages on both. Jim, Yes, there's a way. But it depends on everyone doing a careful job in sending e-mail. By proper netiquette, every person should always trim away the old message or, even better, set your mail program to just not include the old message in the reply. If you want to include something for clarity, you should cut and paste only the amount you need for clarity, like I did above. To turn off copying the old message into the reply, go into the options on your e-mail program and poke around. In Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, go to <Tools>, then <Options> then look around. If you just can't find out how to turn off the auto-copying, with most programs you can just delete all the copied stuff with a few keystrokes. Before you write your response, you click on the body-text area to get a cursor, then type <cntl-A> to select All the text, then hit <delete>. That's all it takes. You're right, Jim, that quoting the whole message stream to date is really wasteful. Besides wasting bandwidth, it makes the digest very difficult to read, waste's the archive's storage and wastes my storage. I'm guessing my e-mail storage space is >80% wasted because of this. Another pet peeve is for people to hit <reply-all.> It's not necessary to send your reply to the individual AND the list in most cases. I will do that if I'm giving a reply to a plea for help and I want to make SURE the questioner gets my reply. But it seems a lot of people hit reply-all all the time and I get two of each message, even the ones where any direct reply should be to Bill Bayne. But virtually always, it's only necessary to send the reply to the list. An easy way is click <reply-all> and then delete the individual's e-mail address leaving only the list one. I made a contact entry for each list. One is "cflyin" and the other is "ctech". When I reply, I delete the individual's e-mail address and just type "cf" or "ct" and hit send. The program's auto-complete finds the only entries starting with "cf" or "ct," fills in the address and the send goes out. Thanks for the question, Jim. I always appreciate an opportunity to rant! David, Normally, you'd only reply to the individual if the subject would not be of interest to the group and to the (especially inexperienced) lurkers and newbies. I make almost all forum replies to the list only. Since the other person is a member of the list, they'll get it, too. If the questioner makes a plea for help and I want to be sure that s/he gets the answer, but it's also of general interest, then in that case only will I reply to both the list and the individual. Our e-mail system is set to make the "reply-to" address the individual. That is to keep all the personal responses off the list and it helps a lot. Personal stuff of no interest to 350 people should be sent just to that person. But I find that a lot (most) replies are of wide interest and should go to the group and not just the individual (like this one, for example). Yep. Just go to http://ercoupers.com <http://ercoupers.com/> and click on the link to join the forum (main text area, right side). Right next to the subscribe link is subscribe to digest. If you're already subscribed for individual e-mails, you'd want to unsubscribe from that and subscribe to digest. But that clogs some people's mail box. Some people like to receive a single big message once a day, a "digest," that contains all the day's messages. Then they can paw through it at their leisure. I've found I don't like the digest mode because I have to page down, looking for messages in which I'm interested. As Jim Slade mentioned, too many people reply to messages letting their e-mail program copy ALL of the preceding message into theirs. When several people do this, the copied part gets enormous. That's a nuisance in individual messages but it's a pain in a digest where you have to page down looking for the next new message. Most e-mail programs have an ability to follow RULES. I made a new folder inside my inbox. The new folder is called Ercoupe. Then I made a rule, saying that anytime [COUPERS-FLYIN] or [COUPERS-TECH] was found in the subject line, the message would be moved to the Ercoupe folder. This keeps Coupe messages from plugging up my main inbox. And, I can just glance at the Ercoupe folder to see if there are new, unread messages. As I look through the messages in the Coupers folder, there are a lot of messages I don't read. Life is too short. Hope this helps.
