I think the biggest problem with this is that anyone who looks at the
Apple code can't then contribute to the GNU runtime.  I wouldn't mind
putting some effort into porting the Apple runtime in principle, but
I don't want to become 'tainted' and unable to work on the GNU one in
the future.

Ugh.. Then it's a big No-No. Better work on the GNU runtime.

Now, if Apple would LGPL their runtime...

somehow I doubt it.. but you never know ;-)
