Another app you could probably take a look at is the Quartz Composer which installs with the developer tools from Apple and resembles what you want to do a bit (if you don't take the more procedural/ sequential approach as in Automator, as opposed to the many objects bound together as in a graph) although more tailored to a specific task (images/animations manipulation).

One nice feature it has that I haven't seen you propose (perhaps it is so intrinsic to the system that no mention to this is necessary?) is the combination and reutilization of many different objects in a group (macro patch) which would be something cool to have.
