I like the mockups, particularly the idea of having an icon display used to separate the different types. Possibly we could default to something like that, and then allow the view to be split into sub- views containing the per-type interfaces (possibly by dragging the icon to a designated drop area?).

I imagine that our Object Sieve will have something like a column view at the top displaying metadata categories and allowing the user to select things from them. Ideally we want columns to be in pairs (type then restriction, e.g. object type->equals person). I'm not sure exactly how this should look, but I like the way the column view grows to the right, allowing you to keep adding additional refinements. Something like the predicate UI in OS X could work too, possibly, but I'd rather have something that didn't require the keyboard for simple selections.
