I would be in favor of eliminating the distinction between open/maximized
and closed/minimized. Open/Maximized Documents would show up on the Desktop,
and Closed/Minimized Documents would be in some
overlay/sidebar/random-receptacle-we-invent-in-the-next-couple-of-days. Is
there any technical reason we can't do this? Or is there at least a
technical reason we can't make it appear to work this way (ie: keeping some
minimized files in memory, but visually putting them in the same place as
closed files)?

I've taken a step back to before the overlay stuff came in became too
complex. A possible solution has presented its self;

The distinction between open/minimized/maximized is blurred ..mostly.
