How does this "tab on the edge" different from "icon on the edge" ?
You still need to look at the edge and find your minimized window.
And dock is a click away, which in my own opinions, is quicker than
a wrist-flick away.
With a key-binding, you don't even need to move the mouse.
Having minimized window on 3 edge mean you have to search all 3 edge
  to find your minimized window.
To me, "tab on the edge" is just a different presentation of "icon
on the edge".
