I am using xdm and would like to change to what I believe is gdm. All I
should have to do is apt-get install gdm in Debian. This should change
all the rc scripts to gdm. I haven't' done this yet. Before I do this I
want to change the default window manager from fvwm to maybe icewm or
windowmaker. What conf file would I edit. The beauty of linux editing a
text file instead of a arcane registry.
In Debian rc 2-5 start you off in x. What I would like to do is have 2
start just a shell. Now would I just go delete the xdm file in /etc/rc2.d
and would this do it. I want to be in a shell to startx. Just in case
xdm or x becomes broken. If this x becomes broken your out of luck if
it's starting in X . I've had a problem with xdm being broken. Plus I
like shells rather than x for doing some things. I looked at the rc#.d
files 2-5 looks alike. I don't know why they didn't have some other
configurations like some of the other distro's. Well I guess you can I
can edit them to suit my needs.
