yeah, you don't to remove the kdm or xdm, install gdm is enough.

conflicts are handled automagically by debian.

By default, Debian is set for 2-5 running X.  This was a recent thread on 
debian-ser or debian-devel (I forget which).  The answer basically was 
'yes, this should be changed, and will be at some point.'  In fact, we 
talked about it here on eug-lug too.  because this:

was taken care of by Branden, in that xdm will quit if it detects a problem.
