I noticed no one anaswered your question.  If your running kde with
mandrake you should be able to use kppp to try and get it going.  I'm not
using kde now.  I believe it's the second tab you change the setting from
tty?? and then go to the third tab and test the modem one of the tty
settings should get you going.  If it's a winmodem there is limited
support for some modems but since you said us robotics it probally is ok.
With the windows side I'm not sure.  I run linux most of the time.
