It sounds like you aren't planning on using WEP at all, so it doesn't matter if you get None, 64bit, 96bit (oddballs, haven't seen many of these lately), 128bit, or even 256bit (why go 256, when WEP is crappy anyway)... you won't use any of it for wardriving. For web browsing at home, using no WEP would be the perfect excuse to learn and use a VPN-like solution: IPsec, SSH, etc.
One note about MAC filtering: (and correct me if I'm wrong!) a sleuth who wants to "borrow" your bandwidth need only capture one good packet on your wireless network to spoof that, whereas many packets must be captured and analyzed (to great complexity, but recently there are some brainless tools to do this) in order to crack your WEP key. Once cracked, the key is fundamentally useless, since that is the master key for any traffic so-called "protected" by WEP on your network. Time to generate a new WEP key and install it on all of your clients... However, not that many people really sniff network packets, so "..." use your own judgement! I'd also say that most websurfing is benign, and uninteresting to sniff, unless you log into your bank or other websites that hold any info you regard as "critical", which don't use SSL. SSL is better than WEP, and is still used for loads of credit-card/financial info, and other 'critical' web apps. If you want to, you could set up SSH to port-forward all your web traffic over your soon-to-be wireless setup to your local server's web proxy (say, squid), so that ALL of your web traffic is encrypted over your local wireless setup. This can be inconvenient for visitors who want to use your wireless, however. If you have bandwidth to share, I suggest leaving your access point "open", so others can use it -- you can setup some firewalling rules which will limit the bandwidth for unkown users if you like, or simply use extra logging to see if anyone is sending packets over it... so many options. = )) good luck, Ben B On Mon, 22 Sep 2003 13:49:58 -0700 "Badd_Karma" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: | So is everybody saying that a 64bit card is just as good as a 128bit? | My plans for this card are two fold.
