I know a few people whom loved their Volvo station wagons and took good care
of them. But as the vehicles aged had these folks could not afford the
ongoing service/maintenance needs and had to rid of their Volvo's. I'm
acquainted with a former service manger of a large Volvo dealership and over
the years he has mentioned similar thoughts to me.

And many of the older Volvo's I see on the road these days appear to be
contributing more pollution than I would want to see coming out of any
passenger vehicle.

Like cars (and lots of other machinery), you often get what you pay for...
this is why we see many Volvo's with 500k+ miles, have you ever seen
that on a Geo or other sub-$10k (new price) car?
