Thanks, Ben -- and Mike and Kaplan (see below)

libdvdread4 was already installed.
dvdrip looks like a nice bundle (though it took a fair amount of time to get
most dependencies taken care of. (for some non-essential dependencies I am
still
looking for libs, and the app does a nice job pointing that out)

However, it too failed early on:
"Mon Oct 25 20:28:51 2010 Job 'Read TOC (lsdvd|tcprobe)' exited with error: Job
'Read TOC (lsdvd)' failed with error message:
Error reading table of contents. Please check your DVD device settings in the
Preferences and don't forget to put a DVD in the drive."

I then started a test with another PAL DVD from the same country, but less
demanding in terms of 5.8 GB 'oversize', 2 Layers, and encryption:
It passed the first hurdle in no time, but is still transcoding... (takes
forever as I haven't set up cluster mode -- Ben, are you using cluster mode?)
 -----------------
Mike, your msg came in while still transcoding, so I can't test. But I had
tried VMPlayer (a front-end for MPlayer, as I understand) -- it played some
pixelated scenes (encryption) but ended up in a loop.

Kaplan, I had played a number of PAL DVDs. PAL screen resolution is a bit
different from NTSC, but I think, the more tricky part is in the analog world,
RF/phase modulation, and whatever it takes to fold multidimensional information
into the one band over the air.
 -----------------

Before creating any more noise, I'll take the DVD of interest to some
region-free player at the UofO --stay tuned.

package: libdvdread4 ?

re: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

another source mentioned adding plf to your sources...

Should be do-able, I think! a nifty perl-gui called dvd::rip might help too:

cheers,
