If you don't go the BMS route, does anyone make a good reliable
instrument to monitor ~ 50 cells. You wouldn't think it would be that
hard to make some visual display/meter/instrument that would let
you keep an eye on 50 cells.
If you add something that measures all the cell voltages, so you can
detect and correct any problems, that *is* a BMS (Battery Managemennt
System). It's just a manual BMS.
It's not hard to throw together something simple and cheap to do it.
It's just hard to do it right! The cheap simple systems have
shortcomings that you may not know about, and thus could cause problems
later on. Like a monitoring system that itself unbalances the cells, or
that has failure modes that tell you "everything is fine".
Remember; people will use a battery until it fails. If you don't have
some way to detect when this failure occurs, the failure can have
serious consequences!

There are few industries with more BS than the battery industry.
