My lithium knowledge and experience are very limited, so when I decided a
bit more than a year ago to get my feet wet by converting a lead scooter to
lithium, I bought a ready-made battery I'd seen recommended on several E-
bike forums.

The battery came pre-configured with a BMS which monitors each cell. The
BMS shuts down the battery's output if any cell's voltage goes too low
during discharge, and bypasses any cell whose voltage goes too high during
charge.

If you're successfully running without a BMS, I say bravo; but I sleep
better knowing that hardware is looking after this (relatively) expensive
battery.
