After Bruce's post I clicked a few of his links and found
myself staring at an Ebay posting of a Tesla Roadster, under $22k.
Wow! did I see that right, buy it now for only 21,900 or make a bid?
The car was hit on the driver side and many body panels appear to have
some damage, but the extensive list of pictures show the car standing
straight on its 4 wheels, although it does not mention if it lot-drives
but that could be caused by the 0% charge level in the battery pack,
so I considered that this should be dealt with quickly to avoid the
infamous bricking of the battery pack (even though I would not
hesitate to tear into the battery blades to charge each with a fixed
3.7V power supply)
Luckily, after trying to contact the seller and getting no meaningful
answers ("look at our website for more info"), I decided to check the
Tesla forums and also browse around for possible sources of Roadster
parts and experience or service manuals. Boy, was I in for a surprise!
Only a few forum posts deep I saw a picture of a car that looked very
familiar, so I read the whole story:

In the last part of the forum posts it has a reference to an Ebay post
(that already expired) for this car, no-selling price 14,900
probably because the pics are the original crashed car without front wheel

And here a NEW Ebay auction by the same seller - suddenly the car has
regained its driver front wheel and looks in a lot better shape,
with price change to match: 21,900 - already 13 offers made...

The ads show the full vehicle VIN 5yjre1a34a1000963, so you can relate it back
to the
original crash story and find the *real* history of the car. You can find the
last part of the Tesla VIN 963
also mentioned in the article of the crash and forum posts. You even know the
original owner...
Buyer beware!
Notice that it has been half a year since the crash - it is likely that the car
was damaged to the
point of not being able to recharge the pack, why else would there be a picture
showing it at 0%.
I would not be surprised if in a couple weeks you can buy an "almost new"
"under 12k miles" Roadster,
hopefully still with a salvage title, for just under $50k.... It may even come
in a different color as
just about all the body panels except rear bumper and passenger fender and door
need to be replaced.
(Of course - if you want to rip out the drive train and put it in a different
car then this can be an opportunity....)
