I've used these a bit on PV systems. Yes, they can get expensive, but compared to a new battery bank it's worth it. Many people go wayyyy too long between watering if it's a hard to get to location. Looking in there and seeing dry plates isn't good. If you're good about watering them manually, you don't need an expensive system like this, but my experience has been that a lot of people do.
