I'm researching this as well, and there are gaping holes in my salvage pack research.
Not wanting to hijack the thread, but along these lines (as an Electravan owner myself...) has anyone successfully found a good salvage option that can easily break down to a 144v pack? (or in my case, I can go up to 156v with my DCP Raptor) I know the 360v Leaf g1 pack can drop down cleanly to ~120v as Jay described. I've seen people add another 48v to a g1 Volt pack to get to a clean 144v at ~20kwh, but there's the challenge of finding and adding a new module that mixes well with a pack from another car which seems less than ideal. Do we former (or trying to be former) lead folks have any other options in this range, so we don't have to upgrade a bunch of other components? I don't know much about the Fiat, BMW or Tesla packs or any of the latest gen packs that are in the cars from the last couple of years. At some point I'll get more into the googling side of tracking down all of that info, but it hasn't naturally bubbled up in my travels. Surely there are people out there who came at it from this same angle of just trying to swap the batteries+bms from our previous system and that's it. I know the Volt packs are a bit more challenging to break down to the cell level and you mostly have to stick to the "module" level, which makes the Leaf such an attractive option, since those cells are a bit more atomic and reconfigurable at essentially 2 cells per brick. I'd be curious - aside from other needs like cooling and the like - if anyone has had success at the 144v level or knows what packs can most easily get us there. 🙂 ________________________________ From: EV <ev-boun...@lists.evdl.org> on behalf of Jay Summet via EV <ev@lists.evdl.org> Sent: Friday, October 23, 2020 12:58 PM To: ev@lists.evdl.org <ev@lists.evdl.org> Cc: Jay Summet <j...@summet.com> Subject: Re: [EVDL] Lead Acid Replacement I replaced my 20 6v lead acid golf cart batteries with a full Nissan Leaf pack (48) modules (3 parallel, 16 sets of 3 in series) for a nominal 128v pack (130 volts fully charged). The weight was much lighter, and the range was much better (and the longevity is better as well!) You definitely do need a good BMS (the Mini-BMS I used works OK as an alarm circuit, but doesn't balance well enough....). I recommend the ThunderStruck motors 2500 charger (with EVCC and j1772 inlet if that is important to you) for a 2.5 kW charging solution that is relatively inexpensive.
