My impression is that automakers don't think about power. A car clock takes 1000 times more power than a wrist watch. A car radio takes amps, while a portable radio takes milliamps. If you want examples of the least efficient motors, look at automotive 12v ones.

When designers need to make something run for a long time on a small batteries, they get serious about power savings. We have solar calculators, and watches that run for years on a coin cell, and wireless alarms that run for years on a 9v battery. They just haven't bothered to think that way in cars.

Besides, "Who would buy our expensive new car, and then let it SIT for weeks?"
