Roundabouts are also quite common in the UK and seem to work very well once you
are used to them. Small ones, apparently known as "pimples" where two minor
streets cross can be driven across (though I'm not sure this is actually legal)
if one is continuing straight through the intersection when there isn't other
traffic.

Large ones with multiple lanes take more getting used to. Upon entering, one
remains in the outside lane if intending to exit at the next opportunity,
otherwise one moves to the inside lane and then changes to the outside lane as
they approach their desired exit. In heavy traffic this can be a bit tricky
for those of us unfamiliar with traffic circles, and result in making a lap or
two more than intended around the traffic circle before timing the lane change
successfully to make our exit! ;^>

The rules for a traffic circle are, however, much simpler than for a 4-way stop
and given how many people appear unsure of the 4-way stop procedure it seems
very likely that a traffic circle would ultimately be safer as well as
promoting better traffic flow.

Roger.
