You've engineered what it's conscious of, but you haven't engineered its consciousness, as you claimed. That was already there.

But you've only inferred it from behavior, which you've manipulated. So if you can manipulate it to make the behavior whatever you want you will have engineered its consciousness. The alternative would be to embrace philosopical zombies - yeech!
