We have our mail on our Exchange servers on site, just the as piece was hosted. Our issue was users being able to get to their filtered mail on the hosted site if they needed to. (No matter how good any spam service is there will always be at least one false positive along the way that you need to retrieve.) Our hosted service did not have the ability to use our AD IDs for authentication, so our users had separate IDs and passwords for the service when they needed to log in, which was an enormous pain.

We host all of our mailboxes on Exchange servers here in the building, but use hosted AS/AV from MessageLabs. All they do is sanitize the mail stream and deliver the "clean" mail to our Exchange servers. This has an added benefit of reducing bandwidth needs since we don't have to handle the inbound or outbound messages associated with spam and viruses. -Chris -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tim Vander Kooi Sent: Thursday, August 02, 2007 12:00 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Spam Appliance Suggestions How do your users check their hosted mailboxes to check for false positives? I had no problem with the hosted solution, but I spent far more time helping my users remember how to connect to their remote mailbox than I do now simply supporting a set it and forget it box. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Aaron Brasslett Sent: Thursday, August 02, 2007 7:45 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Spam Appliance Suggestions Sounds like you may have picked the wrong solution provider? We use Postini and we spend minuscule amounts of time supporting it. I can't imagine ANY on premise solution that could be as painless as our hosted solution. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tim Vander Kooi Posted At: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 5:24 PM Posted To: Exchange Mailing List Conversation: Spam Appliance Suggestions Subject: RE: Spam Appliance Suggestions Speaking from personal experience (I went from on premise to hosted back to on premise) I can tell you that a hosted solution will not save you time. We were spending easily 10 times the man hours supporting our hosted solution compared to having it on site. Granted, it easy to get to am increment of 10 when the onsite system takes all of 1 minute per month, but still, hosted doesn't save you time. (That doesn't mean there aren't other valid reasons for using hosted solutions.) If you have limited staff, adding another piece of hardware might not be the right way to go. www.postini.com www.messagelabs.com http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/products/overview.jsp?pcid=1008&pvid= 863_ 1 http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/services/default.mspx www.exchangedefender.com There are plenty more too. I've used them all; they all work well, but each has their own nuances. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mayo, Bill Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2007 4:05 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Spam Appliance Suggestions We are looking to implement an anti-spam appliance. We need something that is mostly hands-off as we have limited staff. I am trying to compile a list of possible alternatives and was hoping you kind folks might be willing to share your suggestions or experiences. It's quite all right with me if you prefer to respond off list. Thanks in advance!
