I'll try the PowerShell POP3 configuration, though I can't see how I'll be able to decipher the PW stuff when I can't decipher the GUI. I have nothing against PW per se -- I've been studying it and trying it out -- it's the way it's being foisted on us that grates.

Let me bring up another item that drove me bonkers for several days, and resulted in actual loss of mail: configuring NDR delivery. Before 07, it was child's play to designate a recipient for NDRs -- one of a hundred little tasks that shouldn't take more than a few seconds to do. And more than that, when you upgrade you expect you won't have to do that task at all, that such routine settings would be carried forward. But Nooooooo! You've got to go through a tortuous PW-only process where you're never really sure what effect you're having, and you have to do frantic blind-testing with your Gmail and Hotmail accounts. That is, after you spend a lot time puzzling out the difference between Internal Sender NDR and External Sender NDR and why that was thought to be a good idea.

This kind of thing is happening all over Exchange -- perfectly good, proven methods are being ripped out for obtuse new methods. Let's have the new methods, by all means, but don't shove my nose into them and kick the footstool from under me! Especially since I suspect it wouldn't cost anything to keep the old methods alongside the new, as happened in previous major upgrades.

Like with Public Folders. OK, they're being abandoned, but they can still exist and carry on as before in 07. Except that the GUI tools have been taken away. "You can still use them, but you'll have to go through a briar patch to do it". That's what I hear. What would it have cost MS to keep the PF GUI tools in there, or at least to put them all in a separate little package. (And someone will. Maybe that's really what this is all about, feeding the third-party Exchange industry?)

My pleasure - I can't guarantee any changes because I no longer work on
the team, but I know who to provide your feedback to.

Regarding the POP3, it sounds like you've got two issues - one is that
it's difficult to understand in the new UI and the other is that the
difficulty has prevented you from being able to configure and use it.
I'm no POP3 guru, but have you tried using PowerShell to configure SSL
for your VIP users? Actually, you should verify that you can run the
"test-POPConnectivity" cmdlet with the appropriate switch to test SSL
(-ConnectionType:SSL). If there are any configuration issues it will
tell you what you need to do to fix them.

I'm very interested in hearing your nomenclature and PowerShell
concerns, but I can tell you that every concern you have regarding
Public Folders has probably been voiced a thousand times - some by
myself. ;-)

Thank you, Chris, I appreciate that.

Well, let's start with this thread: can't hide a distribution list any
more?
This is typical of many things that you could do before, but can't now.
A
new product is supposed to add new capabilities, but why take away
existing
capabilites. That is the heart of my complaint.

Item. POP3 was deprecated. Why? Because it's fast, direct, and
effective?
OK, so it's not a security champ, but I'm not convinced that Outlook
Anywhere is all that secure. But regardless, there are still a LOT of
clients that rely on POP3 and that will need to continue relying on it
for a
while.

Item. So POP3 is deprecated, but did you have make the POP3 settings
dialog
(which wasn't even available until SP1 ) incomprehensible? Look at the
Authentication tab -- there's no mention of SSL. All it mentions is
TLS.
So is SSL subsumed under TLS, or is it a separate item that's been
omitted?
Compare the Authentication tab on 07 with the clear, easy tab in 03.
I've
been running POP3 for 11 years, and now for the first time, I can't get
my
VIP users to connect with POP3.

Please don't think this is all about POP3, I'm just starting with that
and
don't have time now to go to other items, like nomenclature, Power
Shell,
Public Folders, etc.

Hi Albert -

This thread is as good as any. I worked on Exchange 2007 and I'd love to
hear about the features that you feel are "horribly difficult or
impossible." I may not be able to help you sort out your issues on all
of them, but I can certainly gather your feedback and make sure the team
is aware of it.

Thanks,
Chris

How about creating a fictional user 'MyHiddenList1' who's hidden and
forwards by rule to the secret members? Of course it wouldn't be
practical
for a substantial number of users.

BTW, I keep getting stunned by how many ways Exchange 07 makes life more

difficult for us. The Exchange team seems to have gone positively out
of
its way to make nearly every feature of the product horribly difficult
or
impossible. Or, maybe it's just that they released the product a year
or
two before it was finished. But that should be another thread, or am I
the
only one?

Subject: Exchange 2007 and Hidden Distribution Lists

Since Exchange 2007 no longer has hidden distribution lists this causes
a
problem for us. We have several thousand lists that the membership is
hidden
due to FERPA concerns. But, we still want them displayed in the Outlook
Address Book.

A colleague suggested we put the DLs into a single OU. Then on that OU
we
remove the permissions for Authenticated Users and add permission for
our
Faculty group. This works by hiding the entry for the distribution lists
in
the OU from the non-Faculty, but it puts a blank spot in the address
book
where the entry should be for non-Faculty. If I could somehow tell the
GAL
not to put the entries for the DLs in the restricted OU into the address

book that would be the ideal solution. I could then create a bunch of
"front-end" lists that are normal and appear in the address book, but
each
have a single member consisting of the hidden DL in the restricted OU.
So
does anyone have an idea of what can be done to tell the GAL to skip an
entire OU?

MyHiddenLists are in the '\All Groups\Distribution Lists\Hidden DLs' OU.
MyFrontEndLists are in the '\All Groups\Distribution Lists' OU.
