Couple of ideas and I am assuming your gateways are incoming email and your 
Exchange boxes send directly to the world.

1) Replace the gateways with appliances. Like Iron Port. Out of the box plug 
and play spam/av with web interfaces for management.

2) Upgrade to Exch. 2007 and add something like Ninja from Sunbelt to the edge 
servers which replace your gateways.

1 is certainly cheaper and overall I think 2 is a bit better. Plus you get 2007 
Exch to go with it.
