You know, I started out in electronics in the 80's and gradually shifted
towards IT, so there's a kind of link.  But Geology to IT?  Hmmm...I'm not
sure I'd give any additional weighting to a Geology undergraduate when
looking at a CV!

Maybe he convinced management that they needed to replace their 3000 year
old kit?  :-)

Which is all true, but the last three or so times we've recruited here we've
tended to weight experience way above degrees (or certainly relevant
degrees) based in the light of experience. We've had people with apparently
relevant degrees who haven't recognised one end of a PC from the other - and
people with no formal IT qualifications who've been brilliant.  Geology
degrees seem to be the best indicator (she says, totally unbiased - but the
Geology undergraduate who just wanted a summer job was excellent ... we kept
dragging him back until he finally got himself a real IT job!) Karen
