Orlando: I solved the problem as the linked message indicated. The box is fine now. Whatever LM did to change the way that CD's are linked upon installation (i.e., at the creation of the devfs.config file) must have taken place between Mandrake 8.0 and 8.1. Previously, I had loaded 8.0 on the laptop and had no problems whatsoever. Not so with 8.1. I don't know if Mandrake opens up its installation programs. We might be able to figure it out. As you have had a problem, I have had a problem, and the guy who created the other message had a problem, then there might be a bug and we should consider alerting the Mandrake crew. If it worked correctly in 8.0, I would have expected no problems with 8.1. What I need to check is my other box, which has two cd-roms on it. I'll check the devfs.conf file, and /dev files and see what happended there.
One thing, however. There seems to have been a change in the way that the security issues are handled for devices such as floppies and cdroms. I noticed that when I set the security level to medium, that I used to (or at least had the option to) log in as root and mount manually. Now, if I insert the CD and it seems to be automounting because if I mount manually, I get a message indicating that the device is busy. I don't know if the security setting (upon installation) has anything to do with it, but it is something to consider. Unfortunately, with 8.1 I have had some annoying problem on the two machines on which it is installed. The CD on the laptop and a problem with the shutdown procedure on another machine. I still haven't figured out the problem on the other machine, but noticed that it is linked to whether or not I have stopped the network card (ifdown eth0). If I don't do anything to the card, shutdown proceeds normally. If I shut down the card and leave it down when I invoke shutdown -h now, then it hangs at some point. If I shut down the card and then bring it back up (ifup eth0) and then invoke the shutdown routine, it hangs somewhere else. At times I wonder that if it is going for so many different platforms, that Mandrake is going to start to have all of the configuration issues that Microsoft has. Thanks again for your pointing out the message. I would be happy to correspond with you in the future. One of my neighbors is from Brazil.
