True, and you can use it on reiserfs without problems (unlike NFS) and konqueror supports smb:// for looking at samba/windows shares. However samba has the disadvantage that it doesnt support unix file permissions (rwx) and has no concept of file ownership (just share ownership and r/w on shares themselves. We use it in our flat which consists of two pure linux boxes, one dual boot, and a pure win95 box. However i have also used it when the network consisted of just my two linux boxen, especially as swat is such a great administration tool for seting it up. My college network uses NFS as it needs to have the file permissions, which is great for that system (>250 computers). Another advantage of samba is that it can probably run on the new MacOSX (as i assume it doesnt support windows shares out of box). If you want to share printers however (and not to windows) then cups is definately the way to go, i can just plug my laptop into the home network and print straight away, very nice. If you have samba installed, and swat is running, you can find it by opening your web browser and pointing it at localhost:901 Hope this helps Tom -- Tom "Tomahawk" Badran Imperial College, Department of Computing ----------------------------------------- PGP Public @ certserver.pgp.com
