My system is set up not to use the graphic login window (somehow this won't allow me to use multiple Xs) so I need to call KDE I simply issue the command startx -- :.0.0 (or 1.0 or 2.0 ...) &. For gnome I have tried startgnome but What I've done is to put lines for both window environments in my $HOME/.xinitrc. A quick edit with vi, comment out the one you want to run and put a # comment just before the line you don't want to run, then save & startx.
